About Lighthoof

Lighthoof is a flexible plastic panel that fixes mud on horse properties. You lay it right over the muddy ground with a layer of geotextile fabric in between, fill the cells with crushed rock, run a plate compactor over it, and the mud is gone for good. No excavation, no concrete, no layers and layers of rock.

I'm Kelly Munro, and I started Lighthoof in 2012. As a horse care professional with many years of designing and managing horse facilities and fighting the same mud every winter, I set out to engineer a better solution. Lighthoof is a family-owned small business. The panels are made in Texas and ship from our warehouse in Houston.

The panel

Each Lighthoof panel is 6 feet by 12 feet when stretched open, covers 72 square feet, and has 3 inch deep cells about 5.5 inches across. It is made of high-quality, domestically produced, flexible HDPE rated by the EPA for a minimum 70 year life in the ground. The technology was adapted from an Army Corps of Engineers invention from the 70's used to support heavy vehicles on soft ground. Each panel comes with 40 extra strength zip ties for joining panels to each other.

What it costs

A single panel is $219 with free shipping anywhere in the continental United States. Volume pricing applies automatically at checkout: 5% off at 10 panels, 10% off at 20, and 20% off at 50. Bundles of 2, 4, 10, 24 and 50 panels with geotextile fabric are also available. Orders of up to 12 panels ship UPS Ground; 13 and up ship by freight truck, also free.

What goes in it

Angular crushed rock with fines, 3/8 to 1/2 inch minus. Your quarry may call it 3/8 minus, crusher fines or 1/4 inch minus. Plan on 1.5 to 2 cubic yards per panel, which fills the cells and leaves a couple of inches on top. Pea gravel, round rock, washed rock and sand do not work inside the cells. Any material, such as sand, may be spread loose over the top of the cells once they are filled with the proper gravel, or they may be left thinly covered with the same material as the fill. A layer of non-woven geotextile fabric goes under the panels on muddy, dirt, or grassy ground.

Where people use it

Gate areas, run-in sheds and shelter entrances, dry lots and sacrifice areas, stall runs, water trough and hay feeder areas, barn aisles, as stall or shelter flooring, and pathways or driveways. Most customers start with their worst spot and add panels later. Lighthoof also works for cattle, goats, pigs, dogs and poultry. Once filled and compacted it carries trucks, tractors and trailers.

Who installs it

About 85% of our customers install it themselves. Two people can do a 2 panel gate area in a morning and a 10 panel run in a weekend. Any landscaper, fencer or excavator can do it for you from our instructions.
